Playboy's Cyber Girl of the Month Can Really Grab Some Attention!

When we at the EVOLVE wrestling promotion received an offer to book Playboy model (and Miss Howard TV 2009) Reby Sky for our event this Saturday at the ACE Arena in Union City, New Jersey, the news traveled fast and furious. I can't say I am surprised. After all, Reby is one of the most beautiful women in the world. However, the funny thing is that it wasn't her looks that really got me excited to write her into the show.

Those in the NYC area know her as the GIANTS GIRL. She's been a true web sensation, with A HOT PHOTO SPREAD just a few weeks ago right here on THE HEYMAN HUSTLE.

After watching some videos of Reby, I realized she could talk, and had a great deal of charisma and personality. Reby is a true talent. In football terms, Reby Sky is a 1st round draft pick.

Watching Reby's interview videos really got me thinking that a new era of promos are upon us. This became clear when I started getting links to YouTube videos of the wrestlers on the EVOLVE card. While WWE and TNA have everyone cutting overly scripted, overly produced promos on national TV, there is actually a promo-renaissance online.

Back in the ECW days, I used to watch Paul Heyman spend hours throughout the night until the sun came up coaching and working on promos. Depending on the wrestler he was working with, Paul had a different approach with everyone. For some talent, he would give bullet points, and then let the talent just roll with it. Other wrestlers were given specific lines. Sometimes, it was a mix of both. I never saw him hand anyone a script of pre-rehearsed lines for a basic wrestling promo. I became a firm believer in this method.

I often get asked if World Wrestling Entertainment has ever offered me a job. I think the better question is whether I have ever pursued one. The answer to both is no. The reasons are simple.

I have never written for a sitcom or shopped around a movie script. Therefore, I am off WWE's radar. I have never tried to put myself on their radar because I would rather be free to see through a vision than be part of a corporate machine. In fact, all you have to do is look at EVOLVE's philosophy in producing promos to see a major difference.

This brings us to a recent promo by EVOLVE's Jon Moxley. We are at the beginning of a feud between Moxley and Homicide, who many of you know as being part of LAX in TNA. Homicide and I have worked together in the past with great success in ROH, particular when it came to creating "bood feuds." My instincts tell me that Homicide vs. the young, brash, charismatic Moxley can become the next great rivalry.

It all begins with promos. Homicide started by cutting THIS PROMO

Simple formula. Homicide was given bullet points. He then made the material his own and freestyled an intense message to Moxley. One take and we were done. He was allowed to be himself and the payoff was quick and direct, a promo that would hopefully make a fan want to buy a ticket.

Now Moxley had to retort. Jon has been absolutely brilliant in creating an intriguing character that I immediately connected with. He has that "it" factor. I had some ideas and bullet points for Moxley's reply. I started to explain them to Jon when he cut me off. He already had something in mind. It was time for me to shut up and listen.

Moxley told me a story from his past. It was about a man from his youth that he hated. He knew he could tie this in with the Homicide feud. I didn't have to think twice. I let go of all my ideas and told Moxley to run with it. The result was a gripping promo.

Sure, the first few lines are a little hard to hear. There isn't much lighting. It's not ready for HD. But it's real. Moxley has blurred the lines of fact and fiction to make his first singles match against Homicide on November 20th for EVOLVE in the NYC market much more compelling. I think JON MOXLEY TAKES A HUGE STEP INTO SUPERSTARDOM WITH THIS PROMO!

Austin Aries, Chuck Taylor and Johnny Gargano have followed suit. They knew the bullet points and what they had to get over. They then made the material their own. The result was three more creative, captivating promos. I'm sure when wrestling was first put in TV there were some that thought it was stupid to let the wrestlers stand in front of the camera with a microphone and talk. However, the producers at the time let the talent do their thing and sold out arenas everywhere. Now its being done with webcams, iPhones and Flip cameras. It's time for us all to embrace this renaissance and usher in a new golden age of the promo.
