M-1 Global held a major press conference at Sheremetyevo Airport, which is an international airport about 18 miles (or, in Russia, 29km) northwest of Moscow. The press conference was open to both media and fight fans, and doubled as a public send-off for Russian hero Fedor Emelianenko, as he embarked on his journey to the United States to main event the June 26th Strikeforce event live on Showtime against Brazilian Jiu Jitsu master Fabricio Werdum.
Fedor is looking to avenge the loss his brother Aleksander suffered at the hands of Werdum during a Mixed Martial Arts contest on November 12, 2006. In that fight, Werdum locked Emelianenko in an Arm Triangle Choke and got the shocking tap out victory.
The Fedor vs Werdum Strikeforce event will take place at the HP Pavilion in San Jose, California live on Showtime. The event will also feature the most dominant female in MMA history Cris Cyborg defending the Strikeforce Womens Lightweight Championship against Jan Finley; Josh Thomson vs Pat Healy; and the much-anticipated rematch between Cung Le and knockout specialist Scott Smith.
