Strikes of Force: Alistair Overeem Manhandles Brett Rogers, Challenges Fedor

In a sheer display of brute force and power, Alistair Overeem successfully defended the Strikeforce World Heavyweight Championship aganst Brett Rogers last night in front of a reported 8,136 fans at the Scottrade Center in St. Louis. The fight, which was the main event of Strikeforce's lastest live airing on Showtime, didn't take long. Overeem dominated Rogers in shocking fashion, simply throwing him to the canvas, then implementing a brutal ground and pound before referee John McCarthy mercifully stepped in and stopped the contest at 3:40 into the first round.

When asked what's next on his agenda, Overeem stated wanted to fight Russian legend Fedor Emelianenko. It seems to be the fight people now want to see.

“To be very honest, the situation is Fedor’s fighting on June 26,” stated Strikeforce CEO Scott Coker, who clearly realizes he now has a big money fight for the expensive Emelianenko. Fedor will be fighting Fabricio Werdum in Strikeforce's hometown of San Jose that night, just one week before the BROCK LESNAR VS SHANE CARWIN UFC UNDISPUTED TITLE MATCH IN LAS VEGAS.

Always the thinking man's promoter, Coker continued, “Alistair has told me he’d love to fight Fedor. But that’s going to be something, if he wins, that we sit down with M-1 Global after June 26. You can’t count Fabricio out. The timing could be right for him.”

Dealing with either Fedor or Overeem has been difficult for Strikeforce. Overeem won the championship in 2007, but has been fighting in Japan and Holland ever since. Fedor, who is managed by M-1 Global, seems to always be in negotiations with Coker and Strikeforce.

But the prospect of a Fedor vs Overeem fight seems to have the MMA world buzzing today, which is a huge positive for Strikeforce, coming off a SERIES OF SETBACKS that started with a huge post-fight brawl on CBS.
